In the next post in our series about car hire holidays in the Lake Como area, we look at the route between Lecco and Varenna.
It’s easy to get to Varenna from Lecco, and it will only take you about half an hour to drive there in your hire car. Just head out of Lecco on the SS36 and then take the SP72 to Varenna. This will take you up along the east shore of the east branch of the lake, through a number of towns and villages including Abbadia Lariana, Mandello del Lario, Olcio, Grumo and Fiumelatte.
There are not many tourist attractions along this route, but you will see some beautiful scenery. You can stop to visit the Civic Monti Silk Museum in Abbadia Lariana. The museum is housed in an old silk factory, which has been renovated by the town council, and you can see a spinning machine and spinning wheel, both of which date from the early nineteenth century.
You can also visit the Moto Guzzi Museum in Mandello del Lario, where you can see more than 150 exhibits tracing the history of the Italian motorcycle manufacturer. Items on display include the first bike built by Carlo Guzzi, one of the company’s founders. This bike was constructed in 1919.
In the next part of our Lake Como car rental holiday guide, we will be looking at what the popular tourist destination of Varenna has to offer.
